The Sandstainers: I Met A Woman Named Perdita, Lucy Wilkinson
The Sandstainers was written after the breakdown of many important relationships, whilst also battling the grief from the death of my father. I also woke up one morning to my cat, Genie, dead on the kitchen floor. I found myself lost in the nadir. The handmade paper is made from the contents of my paper bin the bookshop that I closed on the 22nd January 2024. This broadside is dedicated to the lost woman, Perdita.
Each broadside is a response to the stage of healing I was in from December, 2022 – June, 2023. I remember going to the doctors about how physically awful I was feeling. I said to him, “I feel like it’s impossible to process grief living in this world.” I looked at the doctor, and he was scared of me for telling him how difficult it was to grieve in this world. He asked if I wanted time off work and I said that is impossible because I am self-employed. He didn’t know what else to do because there was not anything to do. I sat their thinking how pointless this was and left. The next morning, I woke up with a pain in my leg, an excruciating pain, and I could feel a ball in my calf. Terrified, I went to the accident and emergency. It was very quiet and I was seen immediately. He asked me what happened and he replied saying, “What you just described… is impossible.”
